Plan the route, then build

Use these notes when you need context beyond a single factory fix.

Where to Start

New Prospectors should read in order: the Beginner Guide (currencies, logistics, first machines), then Gold Production (the four-stage loop that funds everything), then the Map Guide (100 Gold well spent). The machine pages back you up whenever a specific building misbehaves.

For reference, official learning material also exists: the wiki's own Beginner's Guide (with a community tab of charts and ratios) and Steam community guides, including the official-adjacent "Sandustry Beginner's Guide" by Antony of Hooded Horse.

Choose by Progress

Still learning controls and currencies? Start with Beginner Guide. Once Wet Sand is available, move to Gold Production and the Shaker page. After Gold unlocks deeper research, use the machine and material databases as reference rather than reading every guide in order.

For Tier 4-6 problems, follow the resource chain that blocks you: Crackstone for excavation, Kinetic Press for deterministic Gold and Seed, then the void and Aura material pages for late-game currencies.

Choose by Problem

If production is slow, check the exact machine page and its input/output direction. If materials mix, use Filter and the material database. If a route or drone is misbehaving, use the logistics sections and keep the Hauler removal page’s warning in mind: a current official deletion flow is still unverified.

For a blocked path, start with Break Crackstone; for a weak economy, use Gold Production; for navigation, use the Map Guide; for community content, use Custom Maps. These routes answer a symptom without forcing a full walkthrough.

Read the Production Chain

Trace each factory in four steps: source terrain or material → processor → output or byproduct → currency, research, or next processor. For example, Sand + Water becomes Wet Sand, Shaker makes Residue with a one-in-four Gold chance, burning makes Burnt Residue, and Kinetic Press yields guaranteed Gold and Seed.

Use the production-chain atlas in Beginner Guide as the overview, then open the individual material and machine pages for current ratios, physical behavior and explicit unknowns. That keeps demo-era terminology such as Slag separate from the current Residue chain.

How these guides are checked

Game mechanics and player-tested layouts are kept separate so you can see what is confirmed and what still needs verification.

  • Recipes, machine behavior and tool limits are checked against the official Wiki and patch notes.
  • Community layouts are credited and labeled as practical tests, not official specifications.
  • Demo-era names and unresolved mechanics stay explicitly marked.
