Material Settling Order

When a tank contains several materials, their physical order can determine whether a Filter ever reaches its target. This community-tested table reads from the highest layer to the lowest layer.

Top-to-Bottom Order

OrderMaterialCommunity classification
1 — highestSteam / Depleted SteamGas; listed on the same layer
2PrismalineGas
3FlorinGas
4Void Seed / Voidbloom / Prismite / FlorinolLiquids sharing one layer
5AmethelisSolid
6Dry AmethelisSolid
7Void PetalSolid
8Cinder / Residue / Burnt ResidueSolids sharing one layer
9LavaLiquid
10MoonhopSolid
11WaterLiquid
12AuraliteSolid
13Wet SeedSolid/slushy
14SeedSolid
15AuxriniteSolid
16Sand / Wet Sand / SnowMaterials sharing one layer
17RedsandSolid
18SunsandSolid
19Liquid GoldLiquid
20Liquid CopperLiquid
21CopperSolid
22 — lowestGoldSolid

A slash means the source places those materials on the same layer; same-layer materials may mix instead of separating cleanly.

How to Use the Table

  • Find the lowest, densest output in the mixture.
  • Give that layer the first Filter exit at the bottom.
  • Remove it before attempting to extract the next layer.
  • Keep reacting materials in separate chambers when a shared layer would let them touch.
  • Test with the real feed mixture; an empty demonstration tank can hide a blocked outlet.

Same-Layer Materials Need Active Separation

Materials written on one row cannot be assumed to settle into a stable internal order. If the recipe or byproduct creates two of them together, use separate inputs, a reaction boundary or an Advanced Filter rather than gravity alone.

Version and Evidence Limit

The order comes from Bone White’s Material Settling Order Steam guide, updated for v0.5.3. It is a useful community observation, not an official density specification. New materials and physics patches can move entries.

Settling Order FAQ

Should I filter the lightest material first?
Usually no. Pull the densest reachable bottom layer first so it does not pin lighter targets above it.
Do materials on the same row separate by themselves?
Do not rely on it. The source groups them on one layer, so design an active separation path.
Is this table an official game specification?
No. It is a v0.5.3 community test and must be rechecked after physics updates.

Density-first is an outlet rule

The table does not replace throughput testing. It tells you which layer must be given a reachable exit before the next Filter can work.
